Oh, not without getting my ear chewed off. He let me know he was still upset with me for yesterday - never will understand how something that little can be so loud! Wow.

Anyway, I learned my lesson as far as the rain/food thing. He now rates two sets of dishes - one in the garden, where he's used to being fed, and one in the toolhouse where he grab a midnight snack if he wants to :p  Just as well, anyway. I can give him his "indoor meal" in the morning, and then his "outdoor dining" in the afternoon. The way he's scarfing down the food, he needs two meals a day, I guess. The food offering definitely is increasing, at any rate.

So, after giving me my well-deserved scolding, he ate a bit and then spent the next almost-hour crawling around my lap, playing with the zipper tab on my jacket, pushing his head up against my chin, kneading and purring - just generally enjoying the adoration and pampering. :p My friend is going to find herself dealing with a real monster, as far as demanding attention. If I quit petting him, the protest was loud and clear, I'll tell you. Good grief.

I'm going to dig out the carrier this weekend and clean it up, and then I've got a bit of sheepskin to put on the floor of it. Figured I'd put in the tool house and prop the door open, let him get used to it there. Better than leaving it out in the garden, open to the elements. So his "house" and food dishes will all be together, and he can get used to it on his own time. :D

Now, if I could just quit worrying about the bigger cats and the neighborhood dogs, the traffic, the kids... but I figure he's lasted this long, he probably knows how to hide from all of the above pretty effectively. I'll just be very happy and relieved when he's safe and sound in his new home.

Aww. You're making me want to get a cat! :D Which I can't. I'll have to have a vicarious kitty through you for a while. ;-)

You'll have to get one of those really soft plush stuffed kittens ;-) That's what his fur feels like - sooooo soft...

Get a couple of gerbils... they're cute to watch and contained in a nice "tank". I so want to get some more... just working out where they're going to live... considering our cat lol!

lol! Is it because you live in a flat? Some cats are fine to stay indoors? Or do you live too near a main road?

I don't like it when people get cats and live by a main road - it's like - doh! It will get run over! Gosh when we were choosing our house, we had to make sure it suited the damn cat! lol!

By not having a cat... your saving yourself extra housework... you'll never believe the amount of cat hair... dust... I'm so glad our cat doesn't go upstairs now.

I'm going to get on my soapbox for a minute, just because I tend to put cats, dogs and small children at the same level of "Care Requirements". :D I'm borrowing from the Paws and Claws FAQ:

It is almost a tradition to "put the cat out at night" and some people truly believe that all cats should be allowed outside unsupervised. This tradition however, was born in the days when most people lived in small towns or out in the country. Now, most people live in cities or near busy streets - there is much more traffic and danger to cats than there used to be... There is a great deal of evidence that indoor cats live longer, healthier lives since they are not exposed to fatal diseases (such as FIV), poisons, fighting, traffic, and vandals. A frightened (or chased) cat can easily run far outside its "home" territory and become lost. Roaming cats also kill wildlife and are much more likely to contract annoying and disease carrying parasites.

Cats can be perfectly happy indoors if they have a stimulating environment with climbing posts, toys and plenty of loving attention.

Hey, I agree (Although pecking order in this house is the kids, then the cat!). I get my cat in at night (if I can... she can be a bit determined in the summer to be out and about) but that's more for the wildlife. Cats do more damage to the wildlife at night than anything... and they are more likely to get run over.

Where I live, though, it's a quiet estate... so cats are safe to play outside ;-) Otherwise I'd keep her in. She's an old girl now and doesn't really stray far. She's got a box by the front door for shelter, and sunning herself. Or various patches in our garden.

We're not allowed cats and dogs under the terms of the tenancy. But I'm funny about animals living in the house anyway. I think "anything that doesn't know how to use the toilet isn't moving in." :D

I'm not right beside a main road, so it's not too dangerous around here. There's lots of cats on this street.

Well you need to pet him and get him friendly, otherwise as he grows older, he will be a monster. Some cats are just not very nice. I'm lucky I've got a really friendly cat... she's good with the boys and everything. And loves attention (which she rarely gets from me :-O)

Feeding him twice a day is right... Dogs have one meal a day (well ours did) but cats like to have two meals. I by no means feed my cat a whole tin though :-O as it suggests. She gets about a quarter/third (depending on how podgy she starts looking) - I usually give that at 5pm, and in the morning she has Iams... (biscuit - good for their teeth) around 25gs. She's only a small cat though weighing around 2-3kg mark.

Sounds like a good idea with the carrier. Although when we got ours, our cat was straight in it with curiosity ;-) But at least he'll know there's nothing to be feared by it.

It's been so long since I had a cat - I'm more used to the dog feeding thing - give 'em food in the morning, if it runs out, dump some more in :p

Dogs are easy...

I think the important thing is "loving" him, petting him etc... so that he does make a nice cat/pet for your friend. If you've got the time to let him have a smooze with you, then, let him have it. Kittens are so much fun... have you got a small ball or something for him to chase? :D

I took a little ball with a bell inside out to him but he seemed a bit nervous of it (the last cat I had loved it). Then another apple fell off the tree with a loud thud, and I realized he probably views any round object as a potential threat... So I'm thinking yarn would be better for this one ;-)
