Running out of patience
Jun. 22nd, 2010 12:08 amI've started leaving comments over on FFNet. I shouldn't. I really shouldn't. Because I leave honest comments. Like, get a beta reader! Of course, if I were really honest (and wanted to get booted from FFNet) I'd just put "WTF???" on some of these "stories". I mean, yeah, over there it's expected that the majority of stories will be poorly written, and that the authors will unerringly state that they're beginners - but my God. Even beginners ought to know how to use a spell checker; ought to know how to write dialogue so two or more characters aren't speaking in the same paragraph; ought to know that capitals aren't used for common nouns in the middle of a sentence. I generally try to be gentle with new writers as far as plotting and phrasing - but not basic grammar. And I mean basic. I'm starting to think schools don't even teach grammar any more - or that the majority of students are flunking it.
And why is it that the more atrocious the writing, the more "cutesy" these authors get in their notes? Or the more they break their arm patting themselves on the back? Do these idiots really believe their writing is that good? Yes! In fact, they seem to think it's the greatest thing since peanut butter found jelly.
So yeah - my patience has worn out. Call me crotchety, I don't care. If they're all that upset, they can bring it over to Beta Team and actually work on their writing.
