So, my back injury which was supposed to be healed up in a week or so... hasn't. Oh, it's much better than it was, but I still have a sharp ache when I walk more than a few steps, and bending over, and going up stairs, and lifting (even light boxes). Have been living on Advil, which helps the first couple of hours, but then I can't take it again right away and by the time I can, the aches have taken over. Doesn't seem to bother on the left side, but the right is bad. I noticed that the moment I first stood up after falling, too, and mentioned it to the intake nurse. I'm thinking I didn't land square on my back, but more on the right side, which is the only logical reason for it. I'm thinking if it doesn't clear up in the next couple of days (making it the full '7-10 days'), I may give the doctor a call and see if there might be something else wrong. And if you know how I feel about doctors, you'll know how desperate I am to get rid of this constant ache!

In other news...

Have gotten a good start on the next chapter of Covenant. Have figured out some tie-ins with earlier parts of the story, and how to get the ball rolling for the next 'adventure'. Getting back to the canon parts of the story now, and I'm looking forward to giving them my take. :D

Also have figured out a few sticking points in my newest original story - like why the MC is acting the way she is. It was a heavy sticking point because if I couldn't plausibly explain her motivation, it just came across as stupid. And I hate stupid MCs - particularly of the female variety! But I've really got to get down to the writing now, as it's going to be a bit long and I really want to be able to enter it in a contest that's due the end of the month. But it's been percolating in my head long enough - I think it's going to write itself fairly quickly once I get started. But even if I miss this deadline, I'd rather have a good story and try other avenues for getting it published, than submit a crappy one and just waste the entry fee.

Also considering setting up a new writing blog. I feel a bit inadequate to do so - but then I do know quite a bit about writing and have some opinions that don't require one to be an expert - just observant. I just don't know if I want to add another commitment when I'm already having trouble keeping up with the current ones. :p

FINALLY!

Chapter 73 of Covenant is UP!

Will have the monthyly update for the Directory up on the first, btw.

Now, if only I had a wee bit of brandy in the house to celebrate... lol

Got a notice in the mail today. I'm scheduled for possible jury duty starting in October. I can be notified any time during a 90 day period after that. I was called for it several years ago (different county) but was disqualified because it was a real estate case and I knew or knew of several of the people involved :( But I think it would be kinda fun, actually. I hope they won't disqualify me because of my brother being a criminal attorney!

Other news - Chapter 73 of Covenant is done! Well, except to get the 'okay' on one last section from my betas. ;) I think the next few chapters will go more quickly (well, they'd almost have to if I want it done before they bury me!) because it's getting closer to the start of the series, and the characters will be getting more and more like we saw them in the show. Still have to figure out how to get Face into his womanizing ways - which is a lot more complicated than it sounds... :p

Bro's up at a golf tournament today, so have to the house to myself - and it's my full day off! HURRAY!!!! lol Going to be house cleaning, prelude to the major fall cleaning. Worries me a bit when I start thinking of all the things that need to be done before winter hits - but hopefully with my brother here it won't be quite so overwhelming or time-consuming. Hard to think about fall - seems like summer just got started. Already looks like fall, but that's because of having so little rain the last few weeks. Everything's stressed and turning brown. :(

Have decided I definitely am not working any more 4 days in a row. Or even 3. I was so wiped out that yesterday and today I would sleep for 2-3 hours, be awake for 4-5, then sleep again for a few, then wide awake. The body (and mind) is not meant to be asleep at 9PM, awake at midnight, asleep at 4AM, and then awake again at 7AM. Of course, having to work in two departments with no additional help and two nights of the largest shipments we've gotten in weeks didn't help either. :p

So anyway, did get some things accomplished. Got some more work done on Covenant's latest chapter - past the hard parts, so now it should start flowing a little faster. Ready to end the Nazi hunt bit and move into the last few chapters leading to the start of the show. In other words - getting to some really fun chapters! :D

And I went through all my stories and notes for stories and got them organized in a big list so I know what I've done, what I've got planned, and what I just have ideas for. Including original stuff. (Actually found a story in my files for TAT that I'd forgotten all about - only got a little written, notes really, but just reading through them I thought, OMG I have GOT to write that! Sigh. Just what I needed...

Spent most of the afternoon mowing. Trying to keep up with the leaves now, plus I mowed down three more gardens. It looks so strange to see the bare earth where they were, but nice, too. Clean. Still have so much to get done before the really cold weather comes - and especially before the snow flies. Gawd - hate to think that it's getting closer.

Wednesday after work I have to stop and pick up chicken wire, some posts, and tons of plastic. The chicken wire and posts for putting around the roses, new post heap, and various other plants that have to be protected over the winter; the plastic for the windows. And I have to pick up straw bales for around the roses, even though we put the leaves around them, too. Takes twelve bales for all of them...

So much to do, so little time... but that's life in general, I guess.

Just uploaded Chapter 72 of Covenant to my webpage and FFNet. Took forever to get that one out - too damn many things going on in RL, plus a shitload of rewrites. One more to finish off this 'segment' and then I'll be on the downhill slide toward the finish. Then I've got five other stories to work on - one a rewrite of an earlier story that I pulled, and three more in the serial, Juggernaut, one that just needs to be completed and one new idea. Plus all the Quick Picks and Holidays I want to have finished up by the end of the year. So enough to work on, obviously. Plus my original story which is still in the simmering stage...

Got the truck back yesterday, thank God. Work tonight and tomorrow night again. Checked on a part-time job at the bakery in town but they only wanted someone for 10-12 hours per week. There's an office cleaning job for 10 hours a week as well. Thinking I should put in for both of them, since the hours wouldn't coincide. The nursing home has another job posting as well, so I'm going to check on that.

Dogs were sick yesterday - first one was puking all over, then the other took over. I think they got into some weeds by the back door, the little snots. Fang is doing okay - definitely lets me know she's the boss :p  I dared move my arm the other day while she was laying on it and she reared up and attacked it! Settled right down again when I put it back where it "belonged". Geez.

Now I just have to get myself going on the other things that need doing. Have no interest in doing anything, really. House is a mess, yard is a mess, writing is screaming at me - and I really don't give a shit. Maybe tomorrow, since it's a "work day" I'll just say fuck it and go sit outside...

So, off to bed now. Try to sleep while they cut down a tree down the block... gawd...
ostarella: (Default)
I have Thursday, Sunday and Monday nights off, so this is my weeked ;-)  And as usual, I am soooo happy it's here. I've applied for a housekeeping job at the local nursing home - part-time and 20 minutes away - if I walk. :D  They didn't list the pay, so even if I do get called for an interview, or better yet, get offered the job, it would depend on that. I can work very cheap - but I still have to have X amount to accomplish my goals. But the idea of working in town, no driving except in really bad weather... yeah. That's exciting.

Especially after yesterday. I try not to do anything really strenuous on the days I do work, simply because of the physical requirements at work combined with it being graveyard shift. But the brush dump is only open on Wednesday evenings (so I'd have to get up extra early) and the second Saturday of each month. And since we had a ton to haul out (three pickup loads) I had no choice. It took almost 4 hours to get the tree limbs cut to fit in the pickup, and load the trees and brush and then haul it out and unload it again. But it's all gone now, thank God. But I went to bed as soon as we finished, and when that alarm went off - oh gawd, how I wanted to call in sick and go back to sleep! Just grateful it was Saturday night - typically a very easy night because most of the freight is for the "specials" of the coming week, which we don't have to stock.

So today I'm tired but not too terribly sore. A lot of scratches on my arms and hands, though. And one gouge about an inch below my larynx where a branch bit back :p Pretty good bruise around it, as well. So that was a little scary...

My brother isn't here either - he left before I got home this morning to take care of some business. And he won't be down next weekend as he's going on a photo 'safari' for about four days. He and a group of fellow large format enthusiasts are driving out to South Dakota, taking pictures along the way and critiquing them. They're going very close to Webster, where our mom was born, so if he has time he's going to stop in and do a little genealogical research for me :D

So anywhooooo... over my weekend I'm going to get some more yardwork done (much easier with the brush gone) and some (a LOT) of writing. Almost completed the next chapter of Covenant - then only 8-10 more chapters and it should be finished. FINALLY!!!! Although I'm toying with a sequel of sorts - just taking a lot of various scenes from the show and rewriting them to reflect the Covenant history. Could be kinda fun...

And have several characters figured out for my original writing - and how they'll interact. Still don't know precisely what I want the focus of the story to be - what happens that these characters have to deal with. I've had a few ideas but I immediately think of some other book (or movie) that had something that's too similar. I think I'll probably go through some old (like early 1900s) newspapers and see what I can modernize. Things back then weren't so "global" - which, to me, makes them more interesting.

So, with nothing else to say - off to my typing! :D

Fang has found two new places to sleep now - as the sun moves further north, she keeps searching for the sunniest spots, of course. She knocked over a little styrofoam cooler and pulled everything out of it  (including some of the styrofoam, which she was covered in, along with the couch and both dogs by the time she was through :p) and now stuffs herself inside so the morning sun through the east windows warms her and the styrofoam keeps the warmth LOL (Nothing dumb about that cat!) Then in the afternoon, she slides through an ever-growing hole in the plastic of a south window and sleeps in the sun there (again, letting the plastic keep the warmth). She still thinks the best place to sleep is on my keyboard, though...

Found a place where I can order some cleaning "dough" for our books. I'm getting ready to move them all upstairs to a spare bedroom and decided to get this stuff so I can clean, repair and inventory them as I move them. A big job but I figured I might as well do it this way and then it's totally done. I'm hoping they'll all fit on three walls - which would just leave enough room for the bed and dresser LOL

Next chapter of Covenant going in fits and starts - I know exactly how I want it to work, but the words aren't coming as easily as the pictures in my head. And of course as soon as I get one bit written, I discover something else that needs to be covered and it has to somehow work itself into what's already there - which changes something else... OY!

Supposed to hit the freezing point a week from Saturday, according to the 10 day forecast. Spring is coming! LOL
ostarella: (Covenant)
Got all the nits and questions on Covenant's Chapter 67 taken care of and posted to my site, the Archives and FFNet. And got some good ideas from my betas for the upcoming chapters, so at least one thing is going the way it should. Also discovered that I needed to rectify the Archives links to some of my other stuff, so uploaded the "I has Moved!" page for all of those. So now people won't get the stupid ISP's "what the fuck do you want?" page instead. :p

My brother's not coming down this weekend either, which I really wish he was, if for no other reason than to have another human being to talk to - or at least, breathing the same air. Oh well. Maybe I can focus on some of the million projects waiting this weekend instead - keep my body occupied if not my mind.

Now I'm going to sit on my ass and watch the ice skating compulsories.
ostarella: (Yes?)
TV on for white noise (as usual). A whole day of Haunted - which, to my surprise, starred Matthew Fox, who plays Jack in Lost. And in one episode, Pauley Perrette, who plays Abby on NCIS, guest starred as an amateur sleuth. Then NCIS comes on, with one of the guest actors T.J. Thyne, who plays Jack Hodgins on Bones. Thyne's character remarks to the NCIS people (who are examining a crime scene), "That's not how they do it on CSI."

So, okay, feeling a bit punchy :p Finished the next chapter of Covenant and it's over at my betas for slash and hack :D Have pretty much decided on the ending of the story, but still waffling a bit as to whether to continue with it to the ending I had planned oh so long ago, or end it at an earlier point and have a sequel. The sequel would be much shorter, and I think that's where I'm still waffling. Almost like, well, if it's that much shorter, why not just include it in the original? But then the original is already sooooooooo long - OMG, had never expected this story to go to this length, or to take this long to write. Gawd, I hate RL interruptions!

Anywho... time to fix something to eat and work on some other writing projects. Then tomorrow I start on Chapter 68. :D

Finally!

ostarella: (Writing)
Today was a really productive day. I finally found my way into the next chapter of Covenant - no more write, toss, write, toss - it started to flow together again. So am already about half-way through - and actually wishing "Lost" didn't come on tonight because I'd rather be working on my chapter! So the "I have to write something even if it's rubbish!" phase seems to have departed. Thank God! (And I'm skipping the first hour of "Lost" because it's just a repeat of last week's second hour and I didn't like it the first time around, soooo... )

And if anyone says again that writing for a "mere" fifteen minutes a day doesn't work - I will point to what happened to me today. I've found my two main characters for my original story and was trying to figure out how to set up the events (and ending) I want for them. I started going through all the little "meaningless" tidbits I'd written (and never, never throw those away!) and found it. Just sitting there waiting for these two to pop into it. When I wrote it, it was just meandering, and only a paragraph - but it's perfect for these two characters. So in and of itself, worthless. But it was one of my fifteen minute "duty calls" and now it's ready to be a story. So - WRITE EVERY DAY PEOPLE! One day one of those snippets could come in very very handy.

So - a good way through the next chapter of my fanfic, and a good starting point for my original short story for the contest - definitely a productive day.

Now, if I could just say the same about the housework...
ostarella: (Tired)
Just got back in from more shoveling. It warmed up and the snow got a little heavier, so only got from the back door out to the barn done, and part of the driveway. I put it off, because I wasn't feeling that great anyway, but I'll go out tomorrow morning and finish it off.

Did a quick edit of the next chapter of Tess and got that posted to [livejournal.com profile] beta_team . The next chapter is where I have to start in on the heavy editing again (where the original version started going off into WTF Land), so it may take some time to get that one ready. And then I worked some more on Chapter 66 of Covenant - I had a minor brainstorm for it last night, so hopefully I can keep all the myriad of ideas straight in my head and get it "on paper". But I'm going to try and get one chapter a week out so I can finally get that finished. But that should be better once I get through this chapter - then the really fun stuff starts again (moving more towards the show) :D

And then I've got to start the major housecleaning - cannot believe my son will be home next weekend!!!! YAY!!!!
ostarella: (Tired)
Has anyone else seen the ads for Frost/Nixon and wondered who is that guy pretending to be Nixon? I guess Frank Angella is supposed to be a really good actor (lots of awards, y'know ) but god - he sounds like a horrible parody of Nixon with a British tinge. That in itself would keep me from seeing the film - it would drive me nuts every time he opened his yap. Not that I go to movies anyway - most aren't worth the cost of a ticket. I'd rather wait and get the good ones on DVD so I can watch when I want, at home, on the couch, in comfortable clothes.

Still tearing the house apart - throwing so much junk! Argh. And rearranging things. Tomorrow (or maybe yet tonight) I'm tearing the island apart in the kitchen. Gently, though. My dad built it so I don't want to just trash it. But I can take it apart and reassemble it in the toolhouse where it will be put to good use. Then the table my computer is on will go in the kitchen, and I'll bring the desk (which my dad also built) out of storage. The old couch is getting tossed in the spring (the dogs have pretty well claimed that as their own so...) but for now I'm going to shove it out on the porch until I can haul it out. I'm going to make new cushions for the old futon frame to take its place. Then tearing out the old closet in the back bedroom (freestanding) and put that in the north end of the downstairs bathroom to hold the cleaning supplies and equipment. Then I can do an overall cleaning and finish painting downstairs.

Then I tackle the upstairs.

Probably be spring before I go after the attic and basement.

Writing-wise, have been doing a bunch of beta-ing for various people, and working slowly on Covenant. Hope to have the next chapter up for the MadBetas by the end of the week, and I really, really, really want to have that finished by the end of the year. Mainly because I've got some new ideas for the lost NaNo story, thanks to my working on my genealogy again. Some amazing stories come from seeing how various families change, move, grow and die off over the decades. And I can't forget Tess or Billy will kill me   And the next story of the Juggernaut series (Changeling, Mon Bell Ami) is starting to call. Add in the many Holiday and Quick Pick shorts I have stacked up... OY!

So I guess I have to get my butt in gear and make a really really serious effort to get these things scheduled and then KEEP TO IT! Quit letting little things like real life get in the way...
