Hey, I agree (Although pecking order in this house is the kids, then the cat!). I get my cat in at night (if I can... she can be a bit determined in the summer to be out and about) but that's more for the wildlife. Cats do more damage to the wildlife at night than anything... and they are more likely to get run over.
Where I live, though, it's a quiet estate... so cats are safe to play outside ;-) Otherwise I'd keep her in. She's an old girl now and doesn't really stray far. She's got a box by the front door for shelter, and sunning herself. Or various patches in our garden.
