Ruckus stuff
Feb. 27th, 2008 10:12 pmJust been going through Ruckus - watch a bit, stop, take notes, watch some more, take more notes - little bits of conversation, looks, time frame, etc. Then I got to the scene at the fair where Kyle gets "kidnapped" and I had to stop for a while. That whole section always gets to me, like major angst on *my* part; but then, I get that way with books or movies where people are put in situations where they no longer have any choice in what's happening to them - yeah, I know, that's basically *ALL* of Covenant :p Maybe that's why the chapters are so hard to write.
Talked to my son a little while ago - he lives out in Marina del Rey and works in Beverly Hills, and takes the bus to work and back - and tonight he got into it with the bus driver for not picking him up at the first stop and he had to run to the next one. Anyway, long and short of it - the bus driver was this 200-pound, long pony-tailed guy with a dragon tatoo covering one arm - and my son maybe weighs 160 pounds soaking wet, so he knew enough when to finally shut up. He said, "What can I say - I'm your son." Hmmm...
So...rambling a bit while I decide whether to continue with Ruckus or leave off for the night. I'm almost to the end, so maybe I'll turn back my angst meter and finish it up so I can start planning things out and start writing again. I'm anxious to write this part now, because I've seen so many places where what I've already written works right in with the Ruckus nuances. My biggest obstacle is how to sneak the others guys in there. So far I only have a couple of scenes for them, and I know I have to have more than that. Although maybe not, because it is Face, after all, and the whole of Ruckus takes place over five days. The real Team part comes after Ruckus anyway. Oh, more to think about...

Date: 2008-02-28 06:23 pm (UTC)I'm thinking suddenly about Lord of the Rings. Once the fellowship has split up the story stays wih one or the other of the parties for very long stretches. It doesn't cu back and forth between them, the way it does in the movies (different medium of course.) And that works fine, though it was obviously written some decades ago and a modern editor might suggest more cutting back and forth.
I think as well that there's a difference because it's fan ficton. In an original novel if someone disappears for a long time there's a risk the reader will simply forget about them! But nobody is going to forget who the canon characters are. So they can drop out of the story for a while and stroll back in later.
The downside of course is that the canons all have their own fan bases and if "their guy" isn't in it for a while, they might stop reading. But since Face is maybe the most popular anyway I think you're safe! :D

Date: 2008-02-28 02:07 pm (UTC)Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? ;-)
I have to say, I've always kinda watched Ruckus with Face in the back of my mind - but there were a couple times in the movie where it just fell right into my lap - as in the scene where Kyle is up on the 7th floor and Dave is talking to him :D

Date: 2008-02-28 04:03 pm (UTC)Yeah, I can see him as "Face". He didn't need to con anyone, he's not got a lot to smile about at this stage. I can't work out really what year that film is suppose to be. Hopefully you'll tell me. I think the Kyle/Face in him when he said "I could get a gun and just shoot them all." He's being so dry. And he enjoyed chasing those guys/being chased, because although there is that danger, they are by no means as bad as the jungle. He KNOWS he can handle them.
So whens the next chapter!!!! ????

Date: 2008-02-28 04:42 pm (UTC)Yeah, I thought the great thing about the storyline is that once he was back in his "comfort zone", ie combatant, he enjoyed the hell out of it, ironic as that was. Because it was the "normal" things he couldn't deal with - he made the effort to go to the fair, but you could see how uncomfortable he was there. Oh, there are so many instances where the little looks, the expressions just spoke so loudly for what he was really thinking - gad, I have to resist the urge to make the story into a total psychological discussion! LOL
Next chapter - working on it. Still trying to figure out how to move into it, as some time needs to pass (or I'd bore the hell out of everybody!) ;-)

Date: 2008-02-28 04:55 pm (UTC)Glad I watched it again, for some reason I'd thought the Sheriff had allowed the Deputy to take things into his own hands, when actually all he was saying was, sit tight, and he'll be off before we have to deal with it. But oh no, that Deputy, too jealous for his own good...I hope you rescue Jenny from all this...she can't go marrying one of those slimeballs once Face is rescued by the team!!!!

Date: 2008-02-28 05:06 pm (UTC)Hmm. I'm still trying to figure that part out. I've been going in two different directions vis a vis their relationship. I know what Jenny wants, but...guess it depends on how AU I want to go and still blend it back into the show.
And, you know, it's funny about the deputy and those other guys - watching it so closely last night, it suddenly dawned on me - like BIG DUH - that they really were intending to kill him! Not just beat him up and chase him out. God, I can be so dense sometimes...like all the other times I watched it! :p Too busy watching Kyle, I think LOL

Date: 2008-02-28 06:10 pm (UTC)Oh those guys really were going to harm him second time round. First time I think they wanted to just scare him off, but once they'd captured him from the fair, this was a very different ball game. I loved how he scared the crap out of them though!!! lol! I know what you mean...you can easily be distracted by Kyle ;-)

Date: 2008-02-28 06:13 pm (UTC)Yes, it has to be in the 70s somewhere. She says she was 16, and they married a week before he went to Nam. And he'd been missing 4 years. But somewhere along the line, he'd returned (one of the bad guys said so) and I'm guessing her boy is 4-5 years old (unless he's suppose to be older) but he doesn't look much older than my son (who's 3).
So did she have a shotgun wedding, to wed at 16? Or did she fall pregnant when he returned? Can you answer that one for me too?
