Heh, her apprecation of Dirk comes through loud and clear! :D I'm not sure I really agree with the central argument though. There was plenty of dross around in the days those great shows she cites were on. It's not like TV was wall to wall classics any more than it is now. But we can't be sure what will stand the test of time from the current TV shows. Maybe in thirty years time people will be buying the DVDs of The Wire, or The Sopranos, or Lost, who can say?

The political correctness thing, well, meh, time moves on. It might depend on the channels the shows are from. The more mainstream ones the more that kind of thing is important. But there are the subscription channels on cable on the other hand. They don't care! I just heard something recently where the creator of the show Six Feet Under when first working with HBO was told an early version of his script was too "safe" and he should give it more of an edge. He said he never expected to hear THAT coming from the mouth of a TV executive! :D

Well, even TAT wasn't exactly Top Hat and Tails as far as being deep or meaningful. But there were a lot more "love those guys" type of shows than nowadays. Like the BSG thing - the original was all hope and innocence, the new all dark and dreary. And there is a lot more sex and swearing and violence. Sometimes that's okay, but other times it seems like they just throw it in. Or that's the whole gist of the show. And don't even get me started on the 'strong females' BS!

I don't know. My take on TV and movies for the most part is that they're either so PC they bore you to tears, or they go so far the other way that it pulls you down, either into the gutter or into depression. :p
