ostarella: (Say What)

Okay, I've been watching yet another show about morbidly obese people. (That in itself should tell you what crap is on television.) These shows show how these people are trying to lose weight through dangerous surgery - dangerous because of their massive weight. And I'm talking massive - 400 to 1000 pounds.

Yeah.

Now, I'm all for people trying to help themselves, but these shows make these guys look like they have some disease that's NOT THEIR FAULT.

What a load of bullshit!

The reason the vast majority of these people are morbidly obese is because they fucking eat too much. They show what a "normal" meal is for them - about what the rest of us would eat in three days. Literally. And nobody's forcing this food down their throats. Some of them would sneak food if the family didn't provide it. And then they'd whine because they've *tried* to lose weight and couldn't.

Give me a break.

And all this bullshit just makes it harder for those few who really do have a physical problem that causes the obesity. Yes, there are people like that. My best friend in school had a sister who was like that from birth. But you know what - her family watched her diet like hawks. Measured everything, made sure she didn't get the types of food that didn't metabolize properly - they took care of her and taught her how to do it for herself. Now an adult, she's still overweight, but not morbidly obese.

Her family took control and she took it from there.

These other people have a disease? They started over-eating because a) they went through a divorce; b) they went through a death in the family; c) their mothers overfed them; d) they just liked food.

Those are diseases?

Yeah, it's great they're finally - FINALLY - doing something about it, but don't act like they're heroes or somehow special. They're just finally taking responsiblity for themselves, just like the rest of us do.

I've got some mixed feelings about this, because I really do think these people - and the rest of us - have been let down by the authorities for years, thanks to their totally wrong advice about diet.

I couldn't lose weight till I found low carb dieting, and then it was literally easy. Only then could I actually take control, because I had control of my blood sugar.

Sugar is the hunger demon, and until people get off that they won't stop feeling hungry and won't stop eating. Studies have been done showing if you feed people 10,000 calories in a day of food high in simple carbs they will still be hungry!

Overfeeding by parents can be an issue too. There was a story around a few months ago in the UK papers. This poor girl who is Britain's fattest teenager. Her story made it clear she never had a chance. Her mother thought she wasn't gaining weight enough on baby formula and fed her condensed milk - chock full of sugar. So she started out as a baby on the blood sugar roller coaster and never got off. They showed what she ate in a day, and ceetainly it was a lot, but the main thing that struck is that it was all junk carbs! All processed stuff. There was, to my mind, no real food there. No quality protein, no natural fats, just transfats, and all of it high in sugar and starch. I felt absolutely sure that poor girl ate that huge amount of food and was still hungry! She also already had type 2 diabetes of course.

So think people can take control, if they get the right tools to do so, the right advice, and they aren't right now unless they pretty much stumble across it themselves, or Atkins has another popular phase.

I'm in a ranty kind of mood tonight. ;-)

I can understand kids *to a certain age* being overweight because of ignorance or parental stupidity - but after that... Especially in this day and age when there is so much out there about proper eating. Whether it's low carb or vegetarian or MB - there are intelligent choices that people with any brains can figure out. After that it's just a matter of stop the whining and get on with it. And that's what irritates me - that victim mode everyone loves to live in. God.

People do seem to want to be victims these days, which is pretty weird.

Well, not really. If they're victims, they don't have any responsibility. It's somebody else's fault and someone else will "take care of them".

Another way of saying maturity level at stagnation point.
