Intuition proves out!

Just got an email from Yahoo concerning Yahoo Messenger and that virus that destroyed my other computer. I haven't reinstalled it because I wasn't sure if my account/files/whatever might still be 'dangerous' - turns out I was right. The tech person said there was no guarantee that I couldn't infect my new machine by reinstalling YIM - so he suggested using "Yahoo Messenger on the Web" - not as many bells and whistles but I can chat with people just the same as with YIM. Which suits me just fine. So I'll be signing up for that instead.

Just goes to show - sometimes being dumb about techno stuff leads one down the right path anyway. :D

I definitely can't get into Facebook. For one thing they seem to want to know way too much about you!

Twitter's fun, but also I've got lots of writers on my contacts on there and they often post interesting links.

It's good for finding stuff out before it appears anywhere else. I remeber a while back my Gmail was down. I looked on Twitter and it turned out nobody in the world could get their Gmail up. So that was definitely the fastest way to find that out. Breaking news and rolling news stories. Sort of commentating on things on TV. Sounds daft I know, but it can be fun. It made the Prime Ministerial Debates before the election here much more fun.

I could see using it for writing - but let's face it - if it's not something I can just log onto and type, I'd be lost. I mean, LJ took me a while to figure out! LOL Too much "site-specific" jargon and I just say, fuck it, spell it out or forget it. :p

Well, in case you wanted to check it out...
Getting started on Twitter.

Okay, I'll check that out. It would be nice to see what other writers are saying/doing - boards are a little too restrictive and/or inconsistent administratively for real dialogue, I'm finding. So maybe - sigh - Twitter and I will just have to fight it out ;-)

Facebook is more about keeping in touch with the people you know. I tend to share photos and all that sort of stuff with friends. It's okay as long as you say 'friends only' on stuff. You can keep it private, and you don't have to put all your info on there. I haven't.
