ostarella: (Fang)
It's been three years since we discovered Fang in our backyard. Wow. August 6, 2009 was my first post about her. She's now well-ensconced in our home, much to Petey's continuing dismay. She hasn't grown much - she's just over 12 inches long, chest to butt, and weighs a little over 4 pounds. So far she's managing to exercise enough so she remains nicely sleek. She's just as talkative as she always was, letting everyone and anyone know when she's unhappy, when her food dish is empty, when her crap box is not, when she wants into a closed room and when she wants out (she hates closed doors!), and when she just wants to chat. She definitely has a temper when she doesn't get her own way - my arm is a continual sea of scratches from when I dared expect her to get off my lap. She's finally learned that the dining room table is out of bounds, although when we have chicken she conveniently forgets that. And whoever thinks cats are stealthy have never heard her rampaging up and down the stairs in the middle of the night.

Still, it doesn't seem like it's been that long since she poked her little face out of the lilies. Like my brother said, we didn't find her - she chose us.

Just uploaded the latest for the Directory (shadowwalker.info/archives_updates.html  It's getting a bit cumbersome, since there are sooooo many (not just new stories, but updates to WIPs, new links, etc). I really need to figure out a site search engine, too, but everything seems so complicated. Any suggestions welcome.

My brother is up in the Cities again today. He goes up once a week or so, to do lawyer-type stuff, and then goes to his darkroom for a few hours. I have to admit, I like those days. Nothing against Bro, but it does give me a little breather from people. After living alone for so long, having another body constantly around ups the stress levels. So I'm getting a few odds and ends taken care of that aren't easily done when he's around.

Having to keep a closer eye on Fang now. Don't know if I mentioned this before, but she got out a couple weeks ago. We usually left the backdoor unlocked when Petey went out to do his thing (so he could bang it open when he was ready to come in) and then just closed the kitchen door so Fang wouldn't get out there. Unfortunately, she found an alternate route and ended up sleeping in the toolhouse overnight. Just lucky she remembered her old haunts. :p I didn't realize she was missing because she's typically sleeping up in Bro's room when I go to work, so it wasn't until she didn't show up when I got home that I got worried. Boy, she came bouncing down from the rafters when I went out looking for her, very loudly chastising me for leaving her out all night.

She's not going to be a very big cat, though. Shoulders to butt she's not quite 11", and still weighs less than 5 pounds. She's about two now, so I figure that's as big as she'll ever get. Petey is my "Big Baby" and Fang is my "Tiny Baby". Yeah, I'm allowed to get mushy about the animals, so there! :p

Have been having the strangest dreams lately. One was my dad and I hunting down and killing these HUGE spiders and centipedes; another involved my dad and I trying to build something, but I can't remember all the details. Yet another I slammed sideways into a semi-trailer with my truck, flattening it like a pancake, and then trying to call my dad so I could get to work. Probably a combination of stress and my dad's death anniversary coming up. I've been doing way too much thinking about that.

We have a ton of birds in the yard now. My brother's seriously concerned about the amount of birdseed they're going through! LOL Goldfinches, purple finches, cardinals, bluejays, purple grackles, crows,  indigo buntings, grosbeaks, catbirds, mourning doves, a trio of Baltimore Orioles the last couple of days, several different kinds of sparrows - and yesterday, a hawk, sitting in one of our maple trees! Never saw that before. Can't hear yourself think outside for all the singing :D

Anyway... hoping to get to a con the end of July, to see DB again. My son can't make it home for his birthday this year (due to the new job - which he's doing very well at, and is already in line for a promotion!) so I feel like I need something nice happening. Maybe I'll take a couple extra days and take a long route home after. I think part of my ongoing dissatisfaction/depression is just the fact I haven't been able to let my wanderlust take over. I just wasn't meant to stay in one place for long. I need a home port, not an anchor holding me in place.

One step closer to retirement - age-wise, anyway. No longer able to say "I'm almost 56." Hit it dead on today.

Yawn.

My brother went down and got a cake - I shall, no doubt, have it completely devoured before the weekend. And feel suitably guilty and nauseous for having done so.

In other news, have a ton of stuff to get done today (my One Day Off). Have another chapter from JFM's last fanfic to beta - sorry it's taken so long :(  And one for Billy, as well - taken even longer. I am so remiss in these things lately. No excuses. Just haven't had my mind on writing. Too damn cold for that.

Saw an old friend of mine the other night at work - the jack of all trades who buys any mechanical junk he can get cheap and rebuilds it - just for the fun of it. He's going to keep an eye out for an old bus, RV, whatever. I just cannot see me going through another winter up here. If I have to ask for a transfer via work to the southern states next winter, I'll do it. I'm just so tired of being cold all the time.

Got Fang one of those laser toys the other day - she was scared of it at first. Not so Petey. He still chases the damn thing around the floor. Fang has gotten the hang of it as well now, so we (my brother and I) put them both through their paces at regular intervals.

So okay. That's it for now. Thought I better put something out here or people might think I'd fallen off the face of the earth. (Well, except for a couple forums where I continue to resist the PC mode... EG)

And I got more long-overdue yardwork done. So nice to be able to get into an area and just tear everything apart! LOL

My brother loaded up the pickup with an old brush pile Saturday and I got that hauled out. I really needed to get that out of there because it was where I'm going to have to park the truck this winter. Has a very nice lot of compost there now, which has to be dug out and stashed elsewhere until we put it into the gardens next spring. I started digging it out today, but then found that A) there's sugar sand underneath it (which means it should go into the rose gardens in particular, to provide better drainage in the clay soil) and B) the old cement foundation (used to be a lean-to there) goes down almost 9 inches. So emailed my bro and we decided to dig out the whole thing down to the bottom of the foundation, put in a special kind of cloth over the subsoil and then fill it with gravel. Now, bear in mind, the area we're talking about is approximately 8 feet wide and 14 feet long. And the compost is 2-3" deep above the top of the foundation. In other words - that's a hell of a lot of digging to do! But I'm going to work on it a little bit each day and he'll help over the weekend. We've got 2-3 weeks before it *has* to be done (winter parking restrictions and snow) so we should have time. Hopefully our backs will hold up!

Also tore apart a garden in front of the house. The gal that took care of my mom had put the garden in (which was pretty) but she used old tree stumps for a border and they were rotting out. Most came out fairly easily, but there was one about 5 feet long and not quite 2 feet wide - wasn't quite as rotted as the others and it was damn heavy! But all of that's in the pickup now and the garden itself is cut down and mowed. Tomorrow I have to mow the lawn again as we got a ton more leaves dropped over the weekend. I mow, dump the bag onto a tarp and then when the tarp is 'full', drag it back to the post heap and dump it. It seems like a lot of work but it's a lot easier and neater than raking...

Got some more notes typed up for my book. I keep thinking up various scenes for it and then have to figure out how different things work, or what agencies do what, etc etc. Not sure how many will actually get into the story, but I have the info if I need them. And it's strange - I have one character that I was going to name Sam but damn if he insists his name is David! As I'm typing up my notes I keep typing David instead of Sam and then have to go and change it... I'm thinking I'm just going to have to give in and let the man be David!

On another note, Muffy's getting weaker every day. She's so thin now we have to make sure the cushions on the couch are tucked in tightly or she slides right in between them and then can't get out. It's like picking up a pillowcase. Sleeps all the time except to go outside or when I wake her up to eat. Tonight she slept in my arms for almost an hour while I was working at the computer. She's not in pain or anything (I'd have her put down if I saw that). I keep watching her to see if she's still breathing; I almost hate to come home in the morning because I don't know if she'll still be there...

Fang and Petey are doing okay, thank God. Fang is now a whopping 4 pounds. Chest to butt not quite a foot long. Don't think she's going to get any bigger - she's well over a year old now. Petey still has trouble getting up and down steps and he doesn't stand on his hind legs to beg any more, but otherwise he's cool. He's almost 11 now.

Anyhoo... life goes on. Or so they say...

Remember how I was saying how much I loved fall? Well, today is reminding me of some of the lesser 'virtues' of the season. It's only supposed to get in the low 60s (17 C), it's windy (29 mph) and cloudy. A great day to be inside, but... A reminder that I have to get the windows washed (all 29 of them) and start getting plastic put on the ones in rooms we don't use (the rest will get done once it's definitely too cold to have them open). I have to replace the back door as well, as the old one is rotting at the bottom :-(  Oh well - like I told my brother - this time of year it's easier to do the yardwork as everything can just get cut down and cleaned up instead of having to worry about the new stuff coming in. :D

Our oven quit working yesterday - I think. It would light and start heating and then quit. Then re-light, heat, then quit. Sometimes it would run for only a few seconds, other times for a few minutes. Gawd. So depending on how much it will cost to repair, we may be looking at a new one. Which is okay, because neither my brother nor I like this son of a bitch. Way too big, for one thing, and too many gadgets that never worked the way they were supposed to. But we shall see.

Fang, btw, now has access to all parts of the house except the basement and storage rooms. I got tired of fighting to keep her out of the kitchen - but she's discovered it's not nearly as much fun being in there as it was trying to get in. She slinks around like enemies are waiting around every corner - and the stove scares the bejeebers out of her (well, it was clanking and hissing a lot when I was trying to get it going :p). But it's nice not having to have the door closed all the time.

Found a new contest to enter - 2K to 20K word count, top prize $2000 and pub, 3rd prize $700 and pub. Spent a few frustrated hours trying to figure out something to write for it and then things kinda broke open. Have until the end of Sept to get it done. So what the heck - nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Had been thinking of using Nanowrimo to get the ball rolling with the "big" original story (I still feel self-conscious calling it "my novel" :p) but it's been poking me with such frequency (an idea here, a snippet there) that I don't know if I'll be able to hold out until then. Then again, if I keep just jotting everything down and doing research, maybe by the time Nano comes around, I'll be out of the starting gate like Secretariat  LOL

Also going to take an online writing course through Fiction Factor - "How to Write a Thriller". Even though I'm not *really* writing a thriller - well, it could be called that, I guess. Anyway, there are enough things in common with a thriller and an "action/adventure" story that I think it will be helpful. And it's only $31 for the six week course, so not like I'm putting out a huge sum of money.

Anyway - now to decide if I should go back to bed or do some miscellaneous chores... bed, with a warm blanket and three furballs for heat sounds really nice right now. :D

It's been hot (upper 80s) and humid. Humid as in clothes feel damp ALL THE TIME. My skin feels damp ALL THE TIME. My hair is hanging like cold spaghetti ALL THE TIME. Touch any surface and your skin sticks ALL THE TIME. Did laundry and hung it out on the line this morning - sun, wind, heat - and when I brought them in they still felt damp.

So I'll take a shower, which will mean I will be clean damp instead of sweaty damp (for all of five minutes) and then go to work. At least I'll be dry there - cold, but dry.

Oh, and Fang is getting over her little "condition", thank God. She went into the yowling stage Saturday, but is gradually getting down to doing that every 3-4 hours instead of every 3-4 minutes...

Well, it's only in the mid-80s here today, but the humidity is outlandish. Can't even get the front door closed completely, it's so saturated (wood door). The wood floor in front of the door actually feels wet! Argh...

Fang has gone into heat - should be thankful, I guess, as it's only the second time. But it's different this time - she's a little louder and demanding with her near-constant meowing, and wants to spend a lot more time on my lap. That's about the only time she isn't 'complaining', unless she falls asleep in the window. But she's very, very restless. Poor little girl, with her raging sex drive! I know just how she feels...  LOL

Just uploaded Chapter 72 of Covenant to my webpage and FFNet. Took forever to get that one out - too damn many things going on in RL, plus a shitload of rewrites. One more to finish off this 'segment' and then I'll be on the downhill slide toward the finish. Then I've got five other stories to work on - one a rewrite of an earlier story that I pulled, and three more in the serial, Juggernaut, one that just needs to be completed and one new idea. Plus all the Quick Picks and Holidays I want to have finished up by the end of the year. So enough to work on, obviously. Plus my original story which is still in the simmering stage...

Got the truck back yesterday, thank God. Work tonight and tomorrow night again. Checked on a part-time job at the bakery in town but they only wanted someone for 10-12 hours per week. There's an office cleaning job for 10 hours a week as well. Thinking I should put in for both of them, since the hours wouldn't coincide. The nursing home has another job posting as well, so I'm going to check on that.

Dogs were sick yesterday - first one was puking all over, then the other took over. I think they got into some weeds by the back door, the little snots. Fang is doing okay - definitely lets me know she's the boss :p  I dared move my arm the other day while she was laying on it and she reared up and attacked it! Settled right down again when I put it back where it "belonged". Geez.

Now I just have to get myself going on the other things that need doing. Have no interest in doing anything, really. House is a mess, yard is a mess, writing is screaming at me - and I really don't give a shit. Maybe tomorrow, since it's a "work day" I'll just say fuck it and go sit outside...

So, off to bed now. Try to sleep while they cut down a tree down the block... gawd...

She's going to be a whole year old next month - or maybe June. Probably May, though. Okay, so I'm early, getting excited about it - but it's just so cool for me! Instead of finding her little lumpy bundle of fur out in the barn this spring, she's curled up on the chair by the dining room window, basking in the morning sunlight. :D  And she's up to a whopping three pounds now! LOL

Okay... so yeah. I'm in a good mood today - first time in a long, long time. Had my first full night of work last night - doing nothing but sitting on a very uncomfortable plastic chair watching DVDs about things I've known for ages (ie, sexual harassment, ADA, diversity in the workplace and all that crapola) and then watching some actually worthwhile DVDs about how things are actually done at WalMart. They have a set of terms that come close to IBM as far as WTF does that mean?!?! - and then it turns out it something stupifyingly simple. Tonight I have probably another two hours worth to get through - and then I can actually go out on the floor and learn how to do my job. IBM's training wasn't nearly that complex and I was doing things that were tremendously more complex! Argh!

But the people seem pretty nice - at least the older ones (ie, slighly younger than me :p). The young people just kinda stared at me like I was some kind of rodent - but I don't work with any of them so that's fine. I'll wiggle my nose at them now and then, just to keep them guessing. LOL

What I cannot believe is how easily I slipped back into the graveyard shift. I was really worried about that, because yesterday I tried to sleep some before going in and could NOT sleep for more than 45 minutes at a time. So I figured, great, I'll get fired the first night for falling asleep. But other than the normal "Gawd this is so fucking boring I can't stay awake!" I was fine. Even driving home. And now I'm still awake - planning on sleeping this afternoon, so it's like going to bed at night and getting up for work.

Yesterday I sat down and did some scheduling - when I'll sleep, when I'll be writing, when I'll be doing house and yard work - I really think having a job (and the accompanying income) is doing wonders for my ambition. I'd still rather not have to work, but worrying about the bills was draining my creativity in sooooo many ways.

Anyway, I told my brother yesterday that I was going to work there until I had $5000 in the bank and then quit. By my calculations, that should just about keep me from having to drive during the really bad winter weather. And with that amount, I'm good, bill-wise, for almost ten months. Less, really, because some of that has to go for materials to fix up the yard and house - but it's also going to let me move into the old house and cut my expenses down even more, so it evens out.

Gawd - am I wound up this morning or what!!!!! I work tonight and then not again until Friday night - so I have a feeling the neighbors are going to wonder what the hell is going on with the yard work the next few days. LMAO

Today, Fang decided she should do everything on the "That's a No-No" List. And I mean, everything. She's discovered the top of the piano - an old upright - and was determined to walk among the photos and music boxes and various and sundry other breakable paraphernalia up there. First I tried the gentle, "no no" and removal. Then she realized I couldn't reach her if she moved behind certain things. So that meant the squirt bottle - while trying to hit her and not the stuff on the piano. Eventually, after having gotten soaked to the skin, she decided it was better to just sit on top of the chair and look like she was going to jump on the piano. Much more satisfying, keeping me occupied watching for her to move, you know.

The dining room table is her other no-no place - and it got a real workout today. Her idea of keeping Mommy occupied with that is to jump up, run across it and leap down - and then sit and innocently wash her ass. I think she's telling me something with that little move.

Then she went after my sandwich on top of the computer. Usually a "no!" puts a stop to that, but not today. So I was picking her up and dropping her on the floor - until finally she decided she should teach me some manners. She wrapped herself around my hand - by way of claws and teeth - and refused to let go. I got a bit back though - I don't think she realized just how loud I can yell when in agony.

Then there were the "little things" - like dumping her nearly full food dish off the table, although from the way it flew off I'd swear she batted it. And snagging my sweater as she ambushed me from the dining room chair. And knocking a few more leaves off the houseplants...

Last, but not least, she decided she hadn't paid nearly enough attention to Petey lately, poor guy. If he so much as raised his head, she was racing over to pounce on him. And I'm not sure how long it will take his poor tail to recuperate from the maulings it received.

So yeah. Kittens are just sooooo much fun...

Fang has found two new places to sleep now - as the sun moves further north, she keeps searching for the sunniest spots, of course. She knocked over a little styrofoam cooler and pulled everything out of it  (including some of the styrofoam, which she was covered in, along with the couch and both dogs by the time she was through :p) and now stuffs herself inside so the morning sun through the east windows warms her and the styrofoam keeps the warmth LOL (Nothing dumb about that cat!) Then in the afternoon, she slides through an ever-growing hole in the plastic of a south window and sleeps in the sun there (again, letting the plastic keep the warmth). She still thinks the best place to sleep is on my keyboard, though...

Found a place where I can order some cleaning "dough" for our books. I'm getting ready to move them all upstairs to a spare bedroom and decided to get this stuff so I can clean, repair and inventory them as I move them. A big job but I figured I might as well do it this way and then it's totally done. I'm hoping they'll all fit on three walls - which would just leave enough room for the bed and dresser LOL

Next chapter of Covenant going in fits and starts - I know exactly how I want it to work, but the words aren't coming as easily as the pictures in my head. And of course as soon as I get one bit written, I discover something else that needs to be covered and it has to somehow work itself into what's already there - which changes something else... OY!

Supposed to hit the freezing point a week from Saturday, according to the 10 day forecast. Spring is coming! LOL
